They are representations of the Tao. The Tao is soft and unyielding, yet accomplishes all. It is also the receptacle. It does not impose its form, but becomes the shaper of things itself. The ideas are pretty mystical, but basically the Tao is that which, without resisting, without forcing subsists all things. That which is rigid, that which resits breaks like a dry branch.
So female is receptive and creates life. Water does not resist anything, but goes its ways and can dig canyons. The spoke of the center of the wheel moves not from its place and does not resist, yet the wheel could not function without it - I don't remember the bit about utensils, sorry.
