seems evryone has forgotten about the cannibals....they would survive the longest because they wpuold just eat everyone else...it is well known that early tribes were cannibals and only the strongest community of flesh eaters survived and in time they developed other skills and some became a little more civilised

I vote for the rural Minnesotans. Many people with regular jobs still have pigs at home, make their own food, and have huge spreads in county areas, large enough to make enough food for family survival. They also have a very tight community structure (usually centered around the local churches) which would not be disturbed by the loss of "technology." They also know how to handle guns, hunt, and fish, and survive horrendous winters.
People like those displaced out of Louisiana during the hurricane would be the first casualties. Old folks dependent on meds would also die off rather quickly after the "stores" of pharmeceuticals were depleted. Diabetics and Dialysis patients would also die off in huge numbers if production of meds stopped, which I assume is what you mean. Metropolitan areas would consume themselves until the population dwindled; I picture it like the movie "Escape to New York." Then gangs would probably take over in a psuedo fuedal system, and gang violence would be the rule of the day. They would try to control what resources were left, and exploit anyone with the knowledge to further their cause materially, such as doctors, etc.
Also, the US military would last for a while. I am not sure how long they could retain order. Interesting question.

I think more people would survive than just one group, you need the skills, the smarts, and the instinct to survive and it's rare someone has all 3. I would say the Amish would be first to come to mind, they have the simple life, the work ethic, and the make do with what you have life. The smart people would figure out how to do needed skills and bond with the Amish, maybe tell them better ways to do things, the instinct people meaning street smart people would know how to get in with the others and I think you'd just see civilization starting all over again with all kinds of people. People used to the harshest conditions with good health would be very lucky. It would also depend on how the world ended who would be most likely to survive. I have the smarts, the instinct and the simple life BUT I do need meds that wouldn't be available so I don't have the health part so I probably despite having the means to survive would not due to health.

In my personal opinion, I think that the simple people would be the one's to survive the longest. The hunters, the people that do not live every day based on the technology today and that still know how to take care of themselves. For example, those that can hunt, cook, start fires, and live without the creature comforts that we're all used to now.

I think probably healthy, savvy outdoor men types will survive. They know how to live in the wilderness, hunt, take care of themselves in all weather, and they are in good shape physically.
I think that street people would have the advantage of knowing how to steal and how not to trust people and that sort of thing, but they will only be able to live in urban wastelands and without medical care, they will not live long. Their kids will not be healthy, so most of them will not live long either.

Farmers, fishermen and ranchers. People who understand that tomatoes don't come from the grocery store.
People who regularly go camping, they know about sterilizing water and have equipment to 'rough it'.
People who plan for it. They're not going to get caught up in the mob psychology that takes over at times like that.
