Most people I know have something or other, whether it's drink, drugs, gambling or shopping, collecting or whatever. What do you think is the deep reason of addictions? Do you think we need addictions?Or is it a flaw in our biological make up?

Yes we all have some kind of addiction. The most common one would be to survive. Addiction could harm or be helpful. We need them. Although I think the word addiction normally is used for something we can't control that is harmful. I don't know what you would call a good addiction or if there is such a word though.

Addiction could come in many forms. There are physical addictions like those that you mentioned. There are mental addictions like attitude towards others. For instance depression could be one. You can't control it.

Our deep reason, in my opinion, would be we all need something we are used to, whether it be harmful or not. Even constantly doing stuff we are not used to would become something we are used to.

I don't think it is a flaw, it serves a purpose for whatever our genes have planned for us. Our genes are like a road, a path that we have to follow ourselves that splits off into different ways sometimes and we have to choose one. But it still chooses basically what are those paths contain. I think there are going to be addictions on any path we can take.

Oh and I am not a psych major I just like pondering things such as this that don't have a definate answer because it is what makes life a journey.

Off the subject i found out that anyone can edit wikipedia but here seems to be an definition of what smarter people than me say what is addiction.

It is not addiction, more a passion. We are lucky amongst the creatures on this Earth in that we can choose our liesure activity. If it's gambling, drugs, drink or whatever we can choose when, where and how much. We generally don't let our leisure activity impact on our chosen means of bringing home the bacon.

So to call activities such as these addictions is wrong. We do not all have addictions, but in some poor souls, they over step the mark and their chosen pursuit of leisure pleasure becomes their whole reason to live, and at this point it becomes an addiction.

I think that to an extent addictions are natural, and I do not think they are a flaw, but rather a way of expressing who a person really is. I understand that certain addictions are not ones that people should have (drugs, drinking, etc.) but I think that as long as an addiction is something that can be productive then there is nothing wrong with it.

i bet some depressed people maybe don't have any little "additctions" or quirks. or people with too much trauma or drama in their life to have time and concentration for things like that. plus it's probly not really an addiction unless u feel out of control. at least that's what ive heard from one source...that being addicted to something means u can't control whether or not u do it. but then, that might b only 4 certain addictions cuz i no cigarettes r an addiction but i don't think they're truly out of control.

I think you might be confusing addiction with a keen interest or a passion about something. I am addicted to cigarettes and Yahoo answers. People can collect things without being "addicted" to them.

We all need some kind of addiction to keep us going- getting up in the morning, making money, buying stuff, gratification from being there for others etc. We need this kind of inherent thing. It only becomes a problem when focused on the wrong thing or when it becomes out of control.

Before it becomes an addiction its just something you enjoy, it makes you feel relaxed and good, but if you get to enjoy it more and more until it controls you rather than you controlling it then it becomes an addiction.
So the answer to your question is no we dont all ahve addictions but do have things we really enjoy doing

OK this is the first time i have actually admitted this to anyone i have an addiction to pain killers. it all started 12 years ago when i had just lost my father, my head was pounding due to the stress and upset, i was given soluble-cocodamal. after i had taken them, i felt more slightly sleepy and felt more relaxed. i even managed to have a much needed doze. i liked this sudden feeling of tranquil while all around was mayhem. since then i have been taking them more and more, i now can take up to 30 a day. i know i need help, it is like i am punishing myself for feeling so tranquil when my father passed away. so yes i think this is my deep reason for my addiction.
gosh i am so proud of myself for telling you, now i need to pluck up the courage to tell my G.P thanks for asking such a delicate question. i feel you have set me on the road to recovery.

No doubt we do you have mentioned quite a few things there but i notice no sex that can also be an addiction too, i think chemicals in the brain are released, i'm not really sure but i think it''s something to do with that.
