Your office is getting networked, and you are in charge of making the physical connections to all the machines. In the CFO's office, you encounter a machine that had been running on a small accounting network for some time, but doesn't have a RJ-45 jack for the network cable. How can this be, and what should you do about it?

The real concern is a network technician or admin that doesn't know how to identify or deal with network technologies.

If I was the CFO, I'd question how the company money was being spent on an underqualified tech/admin and find a more suitable replacement.

If I was the person looking for homework answers, I'd hit the books or google; instead of relying on yahoo for the answers.

Non wise a$$ answer: Old thicknet or thin net connection (Glorious old BNC connections.); heck, let's be crazy and imagine a fiber connection.

First, find out why his connection is segregated and determine if his connection and "small accounting network" needs to be absorbed into the new network infrastructure. If it does, replace old connection and wire him in. (New ethernet line, Nic, etc). If he needs to be seperate, determine the best way to manage that.

Hoo-ey! What a bunch of BAD answers!

It's because it's running some other physical layer topology such as thin ethernet, thick ethernet, token ring, arcnet, twinax, decnet, etc. A few got that right.

You need to do some further analysis of the network and the business processeses that are involved. Until you complete that analysis, you should not touch the machine.

(Knowing CFOs as I do, he or she probably knows nothing of the network configuration but probably knows a LOT about the business processeses involved. You should ask their assistant staff for further information before you pester the top $$$ dog.)

"cornpie jones" is the only other answerer who is even close. If you start mucking about on a system that you know nothing about -- especially in a C-Level's office -- you'll be on the unemployment line faster than you can blink your eyes. (Most of you missed that completely.)

Computers did not always have RJ-45, it probably has an old thicknet or thinnet BNC connector, or other older network interface. If possible, install an RJ-45 network card in the machine.

Hope this helps you answer your homework :)

I would be concerned about having someone installing a network who is not sure about different network bus types.
Remove the old Network card (if not needed)
Replace with a new card
