Mermaids are real, just not in the way you think.

It is said that in the old days when people were sailing the old OLD time ships they would suffer from scurvy because there was no way to keep fruits and vegetables on the ship with out them rotting in a few days so all they had was old meat in salt. Therefore, after being a sea for so long they would suffer from hallucinations and view the manatees (an actual animal) and see them as mermaids.

ok to stop the bleeding over here. Yes mermaids exist they are called manatees. They live in the St. John's river in FLA. Some drunken sailors got off a ship and saw them and thought that they were beautiful creatures, imagine thier suprise when they sobered up. However, the nickname stuck and there we have it. The mermaid.

Mermaids do not exist. There is, however, a birth defect called the mermaidism. what happens is the legs do not seperate in the womb and the child is born with thier legs fused together. It is generally a fairly simple operation to seperate the legs surgically.

A mermaid (from the Middle English mere in the obsolete sense 'sea' + maid(en)) is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish. The male version of a mermaid is called a merman; the gender-neutral collective noun is merfolk. Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures. They were known to sing sailors to their deaths, like the Siren, or squeeze the life out of drowning men, while trying to rescue them.

The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as mermaids; in fact in some languages the name sirena is used interchangeably for both creatures. Other related types of mythical or legendary creature are water fairies (e.g. various water nymphs) and selkies

It is simply a myth.

In the scientific world... No. If mermaids existed, they would be as curious about us as we are about them. Someone would have seen/met one by now.

In the fantasy realm. Sure, they are just like us only underwater... that and the fishtail thing...
