The answer is usually pretty simple. Women tend to get "starch stomach." You need to dramatically reduce your intake of rice, pasta, bread, couscous, potatoes etc.. (white foods)

I usually eat some cereal in the morning with some flax or bran to keep my bowels working, which by the way, will stop working if you completely cut out white foods.

Anyway, for the rest of the day, I just eat two vegetables for lunch and two for dinner with the portion of meat the size of a deck of cards. Of course, I eat fruit for snacks.

The problem with reducing white foods is that people are emotionally and physically addicted to them. There is an emotional component because every culture has a white food which is a staple for the people in it. We tend to reach for them for comfort food and for every major religious and national holiday. Moreover, you need to understand that the large use of white foods is really a result of poverty. In poor countries, people eat huge amounts because they don't have the money for meat or fish and they have to feed a lot of people.

There is also a physical addiction because white foods work like a drug in your body. They are converted to sugar, which gives you an energy boost. Like a sugar high, your blood sugar also plummets, and then your body craves more. If I eat a white food for dinner, I always wake up much hungrier the next day. No, it's not a true drug, but your body keeps wanting more of it and it can wreak havoc on your blood sugar. Brown rice and whole wheat are better for the blood sugar levels, but they still give belly fat.

Anyway, for some reason, these white foods love to make belly fat. Of course, beer can also contribute to belly fat.

Don't take my word for it, though. Reduce your white foods and see what happens. Good luck.

I don't know how old you are, but you just have to accept that after age 30, your body changes and you just can't eat the way you used to.

Bikram Yoga. The BEST.

The answerer above is referring to what is called "brown fat". It is the hardest to get rid of. She *is* on to something...but the main culprits are wheat (white or whole) and sugar. Eliminate wheat and sugar from your diet and you will see a HUGE difference immediately. The gluten in wheat completely clogs your bowels, so as soon as you cut that out your belly will be reduced. You will probably having bowel movements 5-10 times a day for the first week or so...to get out all the old stuff that's been stuck in there for years. When I stopped eating wheat, I lost 3 inches on my belly in the first 2 weeks, just from this. A major diet change from sugary starchy foods to mostly raw fruits and vegetables along with Bikram Yoga is a fail proof method. Good luck.

You can do as much yoga, pilates, crunches,...as you want to but it you do not reduce the amount of bad fats that you take in, compared to how much you are burning off, it won't do you as much good as you would like. This is a difficult lesson I am still trying to master. Frustrating, I know. Don't get me wrong. A strong and tone midsection is very important, especially for your back.
