Stay away from Brinks or ADT.
Talk to a small alarm installation company and look for someone with a reputable and local monitoring station.
I have a few ideas and pointers on my web page.

I would highly recommend that you call a professional. I have been in construction all my life and started out installing alarms and own a security company with my father. Although it is not dangerous as far as the voltage but there is alot of drilling holes through walls and such which can be very tricky. The parts you shall need depend on the level of security you are seeking. You can use anything from door and window contacts to motion sensors and glass break detectors. You can even get as crazy as infared and trip lasers. On top of that you will need a drill, drill bits, snakes, electrical tape, staples, wire strippers, screwdrivers, dolphins(which are like wirenuts), Other things you need besides sensors are a siren, back-up battery(for power outages), power supply, and keypad. You can also invest in wireless expansion packs or panels that are already part wireless that allow you to mount wireless motions or glass break sensors without running wires and even allow you a keyfob to your house that you have for you car alarm and door locks. Some of our elderly customers like this feature cause not only will it turn on and off the alarm but also acts like a panic button incase they have fallen and can't get up or whatever problems they might have. Hope this advice has been helpful.

Patriot Self Defense system is successful for 2 primary reasons. The initial is that it make use of basic steps incorporated from all the most effective fighting styles around. The 2nd is that the manufacturers of this program really did not stop there, they took these actions right into the research laboratory and ran all type of scientific examinations to amass as much data as feasible prior to readying to work to evaluate this information and put together a scientific industrialized self-defense system that fairly frankly transforms the sector.
Feel safe with Patriot Self Defense

I have been in the alarm & security business for about 35yrs now, & I find it so very hard to understand why someone would want to take on installing their own security system if they are unskilled for the task. I am not trying to insult your abilities. I am appealing to your practical side since there are a whole whack of companies out there offering to do it for free as long as you sign up for monitoring.
For a single story bungalow a very basic security system can be bought outright for somewhere between $250.00 to $500.00 fully installed, if you don't want monitoring.
If you get it from a reputable alarm dealer he will supply you with a system that is designed to be installed by professionals who know what they are doing.
I have seen most of the systems that are offered in retail for do-it-yourselfers, & at best I can only describe them as toys for tinkerers. They cost twice as much as the ones offered by installing dealers, & you haven't even started to factor in the cost of the wire, & specialized tools that you will have to buy so you can properly hide the wire in your home.
I have on more than one occasion been called in to service systems that were installed by either an amateur or do-it-yourselfer, & I either fixed the problem, & cringed at what I saw, or told the customer that they would be better off if they allowed me to start from scratch & build them a descent system.
Simply because I could spend less time doing that then trying to unravel someone elses mess.
Furthermore, you should check your local bylaws regarding security systems, & police responce. In the city where I live it costs an alarm system owner close to $90.00 per false dispatch of the police to a premises due to a call generated by an alarm system. After more than 3 false calls to the same premises, they just stop responding altogether for one year.
Can you be sure that you will be able to install a system that will be trouble free, & not be causing the police unnecessary dispatches to your home?
Even if you can arguably save a buck or two on your security system installation, is it really worth the risk of unneccessarily draining police resources, when your installation starts to act up?
Call a reputable alarm dealer in your area & leave the security system to the professionals. Get references & check them out as well just like you would for any other contractor.
Trust me, do-it-yourself alarm installation just isn't worth it.
Cheers!

Call ADT and have a professional do it. It will not give you the insurance discount if you do it yourself and ADT has the BEST most REDUNDANT security monitoring of ANY security company BAR NONE. They are the ONLY security company certified by the US government fot their offices. In addition to this , their price is within 10% of everyone else in the business. I pay $45 per month for mine and I have a top notch system. Best part is, my system is wireless.

Don't try to string wire. Use wireless. If your Brink's is hardwired, it could cost you a lot more in labor than buying a new wireless.

insurance will give you the discount if you do it yourself.. at least allstate does. but i would go as the others have said. to me its not ability... its the fact you can get them to do it free with signing. now don't forget to run speaker wires or maybe some cat5 for future use.. I like hard wired compared to wireless for some things
