First date - whoever asked. After that - split. I guess I'm just a bit liberated with this. I don't expect anyone to pay for my dinner, unless they've asked me out.

Well it all depends, if the girl has issued the date she should at least try to pay, if the boy issues the date then he should pay, if you both want to have a date at the same time the boy should still pay. the only time you split the bill is if the guy has no money but only a few dollars or if the girl has no money except for a few dollars.

The person who issued the invitation should pay or you can split it.
It's rather hypocritical for a woman who considers herself modern and independent to outright expect the guy to pay. You cannot be modern AND traditional at the same time. The guys are beginning to see this behaviour as cheapskate-ish.

Paying always seems awkward. So, to ease that moment just give your credit card to the wait-staff prior to arriving to dinner. Authorize them to add the tip before handing you a recipt to sign toward the end of dinner.
Now you may simply focus on each other with minimal distractions dealing with payment.
After all...the first date is nerve-racking enough. Have a nice date!

Well, a man should always offer to pay on the first date but if a woman did the asking then i say be prepared if he doesnt offer but again... that only lets you know that he isnt a gentleman..

I wouldn't say I'm old fashioned but I do usually let the guy do the buying. But I would also say the one doing the asking is a safe bet. Usually the other person will step up and at least offer to split the check, cover the tip, or pay the whole thing. And then it's up to you to decide to accept.
