My 11 year old sis is obsessed with Neopets. She spends every minute of her spare time on there. She always babbles about stuff on there at dinnertime and I have picked up that there are pets that you take care of and buy stuff for them and yourself. She also told me that there are a lot of scammers and hackers on Neopets that steal your Neo money. After she said that, I decided to check out the site. It seemed plain, simple, and fun. But then I read her inbox (Neopets has an email system too!). It was full of short and somewhat rude emails saying stuff like, “Ill giv u 50k if u giv me the...” or, “i will lend u if i can get 2 no u better”. That scared me a bit. THEN, I went on to the Neopets boards which were full of horrible people. People were being rude, cruel, inappropriate, and disgusting. I thought that Neopets was a kid’s site! Should my sister be spending all of her time on here? What should I do? Maybe tell my parents? HELP ME! Also, I suggest checking out the site.

Well, it's not all that bad. I usually don't go onto the boards because there are scammers, but if you ignore them you should be alright. You can block all neomails to her, or all the ones that aren't her friends.

Actually Neopets is an "everyone" site . It was made by a bunch of college kids . Thing is ids AREN'T aloud on the boards unless you fax the neopets staff a signed permission form if they are under 13. Naughty , naughty ( I love saying that XD) . Anyways , the 50k and stuff is normal. By 50k they mean fifty thousand neopoints , the currency of the game . Just watch out for that second letter , little creepy there.
To me , you're just being paranoid and over protective. I was actually an active member for a while but it got a little girly and kiddy. They have some really cool stuff there . It seems your sister would know what she's doing. I mean I was around that age when I played . I knew I got a hell of a deal by getting a Christmas paint brush for 12k and I also knew what kind of people could and were on there . Usually kids'll know not to give out personal info. But remind her every now and then.

As mentioned, Neopets is a rather safe site, overall.
Just make sure that she signed up as "ages 9 to 12" because I know there are differences with what she can have access to when she signs up for the right age-range.
I used to go on Neopets, as did one of my younger sisters (I'm pretty sure she was 11 at the time).
Neopets does the best job it can to moniter what goes on in the forums, and innappropriate discussion, and non-Neopets discussion is prohibited and can warrant being banned from the site.
It's a neat site because it promotes creativity and taking care of a virtual pet. You can even earn virtual neopoints that you can use to buy your Neopet items.

Overall, Neopets is just fine (and I am 34 and on it). The key to not being hacked is to have a secure password and one that is not easily guessed or can be broken into by programs that are made to help crack passwords. Mine is a series of numbers/letters.
And in the Neomail, yes......kids/people see that she has something in her gallery or shop or something that they want so they are going to try and get it from her with whatever way they can. I always ignore those, really, unless the offer (points) are too hard to pass up.
I think the majority of users on their ARE kids/teenagers. You can certainly tell by the way they spell things, the way they word things, and the overall jargon.
If your sister gave her true age when signing up with Neopets, she should be pretty restricted to what she can and cannot do on Neopets (I think the key age is 13 there and anything under really needs parental permission, technically, to sign-up).

Neopets has some adult content. If you are signed up as under 13 then you cannot see anything bad. you cant do anything at all, you can buy, sell, and play with your pet. you cannot mail, or go on boards. but it is horribly boring. so most people sign up as over 13 so they can talk to people on boards and neomail. there arent any freaky killers like myspace anymore. if there is there is a huge commotion so everybody would know. if someone says stuff bad then they get reported. so then the get reported too many imes and get kicked off neopets. if i were you i would let her play. its safe enough. esspecially for an 11 year old. but people do get too obssesed. i lost my best friend that way. she spends all day on the computer doing neopets and all night. she skips homework for neopets. She didnt come outside once during the summer because she was on the computer. she snuck out of bed late at night to play and she quit drawing (she always used to draw) for neopets. it is her life. she would SERIOUSLY die if it closed down. we dont hang out anymore. she has no time, shes too busy with neopets. i was able to escape but my life stinks now, im all alone.
I WOULD PROBABLY STOP HER BEFOR SHES TOO OBBSESSED. OTHERWISE SHELL BE ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO NEVER-EVER GETS OFF THE COMPUTER EXCCEPT TO GO TO SCHOOL, EAT, AND USE THE RESTROOM.

Yes, it's ok. It doesn't put a negative impact on life. But maybe she can just lay off Neopets a little bit, thoguh. But overall, it's a good and fun site.Trust me, I used have Neopets, and after a while, you get over it.So don't be worried.

This is quite troubling, I need to stop and recompose myself.
Your sister spends every minute of her spare time on there??? She takes care of virtual pets and has virtual money?
I'm okay with that.
You spend every minute watching her play??? Seriously? And you are concerned with someone taking her VIRTUAL/FAKE money allowing yourself to get to the point of near frantic frenzy?
When someone says something as "rude" as 'I'll give you 50k if you give me the...', my dear that's children learning business lessons. He wasn't robbing her. He was offering neomoney to buy her neo item.
I can't believe of all the things you seemed concerned about, none of which was your sister's drinking problem. That's what I think the true issue is here.

Well as a old player of Neopets I can tell you it is pretty safe like everyone else said but if your sis got mail like that then it is depending on who the person was. And if the message boards are that bad then that means the staff is not doing their job in preventing those people from saying bad things.
I actually got sick of the site cause it was to kiddie and boring so I went to http://www.zetapets.com/, http://www.nutrinopets.com/, and then to http://www.battleon.com/.
And if I were you I would talk to your sister first then if give her some other cool game sites that she can go on.
For example:
http://www.everythinggirl.com/
http://www.girlpower.gov/
http://www.agirlsworld.com/
http://www.girlscouts.org/
http://www.americangirl.com/
http://www.girltech.com/
http://www.nick.com/
If she still is on there then tell your parents.
God bless you on this situation.

i have played neopets since 2001 and i was 11 when i started playing it. it is a very safe and confidentail site-if you want it to be. it is very easy to block off chat rooms if you feel it is nessasary for your sisters saftey. the messegeses u found r normal neopets speak and its nothing to be concerned about-just remind her that no matter what site you are on it is always dangerous, and never to reveal what city he lives in, her real name (i made up an online name i use evreywhere), and to never ive her neopets password to ANYONE, even her best friend. ihope this helps

yes i admit it is sort of fun but you can report those people plus you can set a feature that block the acount from emails and message boards. that should solve the problem
