A sport must have an objective form of measurement. These would be goals, scores, and times. Dance is akin to ice skating. They are very demanding activities but there is not objective form of comparison between teams or players.

Many people who have never seriously danced ballet don't realize how difficult it actually is. Ballet DOES get your heart rate up for an extended period of time... but most people think that ballet is just some sort of girly dancing that's just about being pretty and doesn't require the hard work that it actually does involve.
I think another reason that many people don't consider ballet to be a sport is because it is seen as an art form, as it is a performing art.

i will admit that dance requires great stamena and physical fitness to be good and to do it a lot but to call it a sport is a stretch. in sports there is a contest between 2 teams and certain actions result in defined scores. none of which is subjective. the goal line doesnt care who carries a ball over it and the basketball and net goal dont care who hit the puck into it or the ball. it's only important if it is done whereas dance scores could be low if the judge is a jerk or know for being tough to please. goals and lines are always the same always completely objective. thats why BUT....dance is great i love doing it and i enjoy watching people do it very well. my wife is spanish and dances with grace and passion i love to dance with her and it wears me out. dance is physical but not contesting or contacting.

Dance isn't considered a sport because it doesn't have the vigorous
competition with other players nor those it have the power to get the
heart beating at its exercising heart rate the whole time which is a definite requirement to be classified as sport.
