So i just finished making an Excel spred sheet for how much i need to make a an hour to support myself though out the month and i got rid of the car the car insurance skimped on money for going out and emergencys and food so basically i have a rent which i split, a small phone bill, a dentist bill and enough food to servive on and i still cant servive on minium wage. In fact double is what what gets me this far. So I know that their is people who are making min. wage and have kids and nobody to split a rent payment how do they make it?

I thought min. wage was established to make it so you could support yourself on the bare "minimum wage"? As well as have your house or rent payment be 1/4 what you make a month instead of 1/2-3/4 of it? Am i wrong?

I wait tables so i am making more than min. wage. I work 40hrs a week. I don't have kids and i consider myself a limit-ist. Which means i don't own anything i more than i can pack in a couple of suit cases. And i still don't understand how people can live off min wage.

minimum wage cannot be increased for pretty much one reason:
i know minimum wage sounds great! It sounds amazing to get paid more for the same work..
but think of it this way
what about the people who have earned a spot above minimum wage.. its actually lessening their salary compared to others
what about the people that are buisness owners?they have to pay more to people who don't do the jobs deserving more wage...

eventually it all evens out...the people that lose money to the minimum wage stop buying as much,, which makes the employers lose even more and have to drop employees...with the employees dropped i think that they would rather have the lesser minimum wage...

summed up:INFLATION is the answer.
this makes the american dollar worth less and therefore everyone eventually loses money

hope this helps you feel better!

They don't understand economics. They believe that simply passing a law increases the standard of living for the poor. When it does the opposite. When you increase the minimum wage all you should expect are a decrease in hours and increase in price and people will lose real income. If the minimum wage was repealed- it would be logical to expect at least starting pay would drop however this would lead to lower prices and unemployment.

The problem is that when minimum wage goes up to meet cost of living everything else goes up more. For example if minimum wage goes up by 3% then the price of everything goes up by 5% or more AND the people who make more than minimum wage don't usually get a raise to match that increase. I don't know who decided that $5.25, or whatever federal minimum wage is (I live in Oregon and our minimum wage is always higher than federal), was enough to live on but I'd like to see that person try it. What is your rent? Do you live in a nicer part of town or is it the cheapest place you could find? My husband and I make over OR minimum wage and we just scrape by every month and we live in a house that is falling apart (or at least it feels like it sometimes, we need a new kitchen and windows but the roof works!! :-)) in a not so great neighborhood with our two kids.

Minimum Wage is $5.15 per hour. That would be $840 monthly in a 40-hour 4 week month. Let's assume you only pay 10% of your gross income in taxes. That would be $742 take home.

For that amount, you couldn't reasonable afford more than 1/3 of your income in housing or $247. That leaves $495 for food, utilities, transportation, and life.

It's tough but possible, especially with enough roommates. But, try finding a job at a higher wage.

This is an exerpt from a paper I had to write against the minimum wage amendment that was on the ballot in Ohio. It should give you an idea...but there are a lot of reasons for the raise in minimum wage also.

Most families, that the proponents of the increase say would be helped, would only see and increase of $63 dollars added to their annual income. This is because most workers that make less then $15,000 are part time employees that are only supplementing their family income.
Most minimum wage earners are not poor. Less then 10% of earners are the sole earner for a family with children. Almost 2/3 62.7% are under 24 and 48.3% are still living with their parents. Almost ¾, 73%, are part time employees. Studies have shown that the average family income of minimum wage employees is just over 52,000.

as bad as it sounds.. you might want to research some government agencies that can assist you... are you doing anything to make it so you can make more than minimum wage? What skills do you have?
Try going to the local community college and just try to see if a carreer counselor will talk to you for a minute... let them know that you are interested in possibly enrolling in classes but need some help to find which direction you want to take in carreer choices... They are professionals and usually aren't too stuck up to talk to you even if you aren't a student...
I've even gone as far as applying for a position which I wasn't qualified for at all... but because the pay was what I needed I went in and told them... I have no idea what to do with this position but I am willing to spend my free time to learn it so I can have this job and be the best at it.... sometimes companies see more potential in someone who knows nothing and will work hard to keep the job than someone who is already familiar with the job and will probably only do just enough to stay at that job...
secondly... widen your scope of employment... no fast food will ever pay enough by itself to get you out of the poverty cycle... try something new... anything...
Good Luck

Minimum wage to help the workers of this country? Not likely. Besides big labor unions seeing it as a way to increase their members' wages while squeezing out the unskilled worker, see the article below for the economic myths being bandied about for all.

Let me say that the min wage was not established so that everyone would be living high off the hog. It was enacted into law to prevent such things as child labor. If you can not make it on the min wage, perhaps you need to rethink your needs. If you are married with two or three kids then you should be getting food stamps and other benefits.I suggest that you live within your means

It used to be like that, but the darn repubs don't seem to like to raise minimum wage very often...er, ever.

So now you just have to live with less. We all have to live with less. Real estate how it is is making it particularly difficult to survive without having a million roommates. Welcome to real life, good luck to you!
