What is a Emo?

My step son is telling his friends he is Emo. What is emo? Anything his mother and I need to be keeping an eye on?

There are many kinds of emo:
Serious hardcore emo:Depressed, sometimes unopenly gay, person who wears eyeliner to supposedly "darken the windows to their souls" saying their life sucks and they usually have huge problems at home, usually focused around parents. Like their parents abuse them or they don't do anything to encourage or compliment their kids or they pay to much attention to the emo kids brother or sister. They retreat into depression pushing friends away.
Semi-serious emo: Basically the same as the first one but they don't come close to pushing people away.
Dumb-*** emo: An emo who cuts themselves, writes about how much their life sucks in a Diary or Journal and writes depression poems and Suicide notes to express their "dark feelings".
Poser Emo: Brags to they're friends that their life sucks and then smiles and acts normal. Wears black and eyeliner. Listen to bands like AFI and "Every Rose Has It's Thorn". Brag about their emoness until they find that theirs a new gay fad like emo.

It's easy to feel sorry for Serious emos but it's easy to tell if they are a poser because
1. They'll act emo for about 2 minutes around there friends and TRY to make it worse with their family and
2.They'll get sick of it FAST.

and their hygene is not horrible yes they do wear awesome black clothesand dye their hair weird colors but most emos dont cut themselves as i repeat they are posers

emotional.. .. and yes, you should deffinatly keep an eye on him. emo kids usually will tend to get very "emotional" about life.. so, that leads to wrist slitting and all that stuff.. they wear all black, and their hygene is horrible. .its just not a pretty sight.

no. you might start to suspect that he is gay. it's just a fad though, he'll be wearing girl pants, listening to bad whiny music but certainly nothing to worry about.
