Nope, I had to learn in middle school. It was one of my electives. Then in college, I made a ton of money on the side typing papers for people.
Also, I'm a professional writer. If I didn't type correctly I'd never get anything done.

I do regular old touch typing. It's where you use all the fingers. The fingers are on j,k,l,;, d,s, and a and the thumbs are on the space bar. I can type really fast thanks to my high school where I type almost all my work for all classes except one.
lucky for me, I'm young and I learned to type in about second or third grade. I used this program called Mavis Beacon and Type To Lear. They're kind of juvenile.
I feel sorry for old people who didn't grow up using the computer who have to learn how to use it. My grandma has just learned how to use the computer. It's harder to learn something when your an adult then when you are a kid because when you're an adult you know how to do a lot of things and you rarely ever get to learn how to do new things, especially if they will become part of your everyday life.
My dad's in his fifties and he's a pro at the computer. He mainly works with PCs, but if I'm having trouble with my Mac, he'll manage to solve the problem. Right now, he works with wireless and hot spots and that sort of thing.

No, you're not the only one that types correctly. I took typing in high school and almost failed both semesters because the calluses on my left fingertips were so tough and thick I couldn't feel the keys as I struck them.
Nevertheless, joining the Army I went into the Signal Corps and learned more on teletypewriter operations, often typing tape messages as they were simultaneously being transmitted.
Today, I average between 80 to 90 wpm because I write novels and short stories.

Oh, no! I type about 80 words per minute. I couldn't do my job without it! I learned on a good, old-fashioned, non-electric typewriter. My first typing teacher used finger nail polish to cover up the letters on the keyboard, so that none of us could cheat! Thank goodness for advancements in technology, because I'd be hosed if I still had to use that dinosaur!
FYI, I just typed this whole answer without looking at the keyboard!

My average wpm at age 11 was around 70-80. I could probably guess it's around 100 now. But I haven't taken a typing lesson since then, and I'm now 16. I don't use my finger posistioning at all. My posture is terrible. I just do whatever feels okay. I don't think I ever used numbers to substitute letters. It just seems like a stupid thing and it would probably make a hard habit to break.

I would know how to type, but the girl that sat next to me in typing class was way more interesting than typing drills. I did not look at the screen once during this answer.

I type correctly. Typing classes in middle school + nerdiness. I'm 16 and have an average of 85 wpm. Yeah, it's sad that I brag about that.

I put both of my index fingers on the keyboard, and frankly its much faster than the "home-key" way. So what if some people type differently if it's easier and more convinient?
