contrary to most of the answers here, and perhaps because i have a 7 year old brother, i would suggest the gameboy advance

the date that they stop making games is irrelevent - most games are timeless. for example - super mario 3 (which, by the way, is available on gba, known as super mario 4 advance)

the touch screen on the DS really is quite intuitive, and most games make decent use of it... but when seven year olds get frustrated, they might scratch the touch screen.

also, it's hard enough to get them to wash their hands sometimes. everytime i see him, i ask for the gameboy i gave him and i clean it, because it's usually covered in grease from whatever food he's eaten recently

the DS can play newer games, yes, and it can play gameboy advance games, yes, but the gameboy advance can play older gameboy games - so that library is quite big.

also, VERY important - if you get a gameboy advance, make sure you get the gameboy advance SP. i don't think they still sell regular gameboy advances, except as old, used things that cost less than 25 bucks.

the SP has an inner light, the gameboy advance has no light source - nor a natural power source. the SP has a lithium ion battery that lasts a long time (as does the DS)

I think what you mean is what console suits a 7 year old more? My answer is a Nintendo DS lite. The touch screen is very intuitive and there are games for all ages. Also the Gameboy Advance only has maybe 6months-1 year of life left in it until nintendo stops making games for it all together. The DS will be around for a long time and as he matures he will still have games to play since the DSlite has games for a mature audience as well. Also if you ever plan on buying a Nintendo Wii (very fun, i suggest you get one eventually) the DSlite wirelessly syncs up to it for a variety of different ways to play.

Games I suggest-
The New Super Mario
Mario Kart DS
Nintendogs

(also, The DSlite is compatible with Gameboy Advance games as well, which will expand the game library ALOT)

Hope that helps!

Yes you can play GBA games on it, but not older ones like GBC or GB games. And the upcoming Nintendo DSi isn't going to be released in America until Fall of 09, so you still have a while to get regular DS or DS Lite.

I would go for the Nintendo ds. But if you think he is too young to take good care of the touch screen or not lose the smaller game cartridges then I wouldnt get it for him. I would get the gameboy instead because it is more durable for falls and drops and the games are easier to keep track of since they are bigger. It depends on how responsible he will be with it.

I would get him the Ninendo DS. The game boy has just the average things in a gaming system and plays one type of game. The Nintendo DS plays DS games and GBA ( game boy adveace) games. Plus it has a touch screen.

The Nintendo DS not only is it the newest it has all the best games for it. And the DS is also good to give for small children and novice gamers.
