If you went to a women's tea, banquet, or convention and when you arrived you found out that the featured speaker was eight months pregnant--would that bother you at all? Do you think that the speaker should have cancelled the speaking engagements that were in the end of her pregnancy when she found out she was pregnant or do you think it was good that she still came and spoke? Would her pregnancy affect how you received what she was saying? Do you think it makes any difference or not if a Women's speaker is pregnant or not?
Thanks so much for your input!

Just to mention--I personally would think it was beautiful if the speaker was pregnant--I'm just looking for opinions--thats all. (I'm not against it as some people are concluding that I am.)

From the audience's perspective, especially if it's a women's convention, having the speaker be visibly pregnant should be a GOOD thing. It visibly debunks one of the persistent myths surrounding inequality between the sexes -- that women lose so much time to pregnancy and other childbearing issues that they can't be counted on to participate as reliably as men. We no longer force pregnant women to lie perfectly still in dark rooms and avoid stimulation, lights or noises. We shouldn't keep them off speaking podiums, either.

Even in a convention that was not specifically oriented towards women, it wouldn't bother me if a speaker was obviously pregnant. If I commented on it at all, either to her or to other conference-goers, I'd do so respectfully, by acknowledging her dedication and her decision to come to the conference even in a time of some discomfort for her (because let's face it, the last month of pregnancy is one big neverending backache... and it gets worse from there, right up until the point that you have a new baby, anyway, when it's pretty good. :-)

And at the same time... if she was within two weeks of her due date, it would be reasonable and prudent for the speaker to have at least arranged a backup presenter in case the baby decided to come early. It happens. Our three were all on the late side of their due dates, but babies seem to come when they decide it's time, and all the charts and counting of days since the last cycle and ultrasound measurements in the world are really just guesses.

It would bother me. There are a lot of women out there who work until the tail end of their pregnancy. She is no different. The only way I'd be concerned is if she looked as if she was almost about to go into labor. Otherwise, it's not a big deal at all.

I should say no, to be politically correct. But the truth is, it would bother me. I'm bothered by those two English women who do fashion makeovers for people. They're both pregnant and wear tight clothing. It's a distraction, I think.

It would only bother me if she was giving a speech on how to use birth control. Or about the reasons to become a nun.
