You might think about getting a BLS, bachelor of library science. Otherwise, you'll probably ahve to go to grad school for a MLS.

According to the college board, "ost bachelor's degree programs prepare you to work as a school librarian. Other librarians need master's degrees."

There are a list of accredited programs here:

My best friend is a librarian at a college. She said for almost all library jobs you have to have a master's in library science. She had to go to two different colleges to get her degree. First she wanted to get her bachelor's at a college close to home, then for her master's she had to go further away. If you're in high school, talk to your guidance councilor - they have books that tell what majors are offered at each college.

A lot of K-12 schools can't afford full-fledged librarians any more. As each of the degreed librarians in our school system retires, they are being replaced with aides who don't even make half as much money. So don't count on getting a job in a school system. That leaves you with public libraries and colleges to work at. I don't know what the job outlook is, but there are plenty of career books at libraries and bookstores (imagine that!) that will tell you that sort of thing.

You'll need a degree called an MLIS (Masters in Library and Information Science). It usually takes about 2 years and $25,000. If you choose to work in a non-public or non-academic (read: corporate) library, you'll more than make up the difference within a couple of years.

If there isn't an MLIS at your school, you can always do one online! The University of Washington's Information School program in MLIS can be done all online -- it ain't easy but it's very convenient. www.ischool.washington.edu

There are other library degrees you can get online, but experience and hearsay makes me think this is the best one.
