First of all, the anime series did not end because of low ratings, as N K has said. It ended because the animators caught up to the manga and there was no more material to make into episodes. The manga is still going on however, Rumiko Takahashi recently announanced that she would be ending the manga before the year of the dog ends (probably sometime in early February). If you what to read the manga that just came out from Japan, you can read it here: http://adinuyasha.thebrokenconsole.com/TOC.html
I think that the manga is just as good as the anime. There hasn't been any news about more episodes but the animators said that they would be happy to make more episodes after the manga ends but there is no news yet.

Well since there is more then one question here I'll address each one as they appear.

To answer your question about the stopping of more production of anime episodes 1/2 way through the show the answer would lie in the fact that it is actually VERY common for anime that was based off of manga to end half way through. The reason for this being lies in rating. As we know, rating controll everything and determines the fate of shows, beloved or not. I think one of the main reasons for the show loosing ratings and eventually being discontinued is the fact that the story pacing compared to many of the shows that viewers could choose to watch around the same time on TV in Japan had better pacing. Unfortunatly, although the manga is still popular in animated form, the show seemed to slowly progress , filled with what seemed like filler episodes then episodes with alot of progression and development and viewers slowly started to fade away from watching the show. Although the show actually HAD scheduled more episodes to be made then the actually number of episode it ended with, as stated before, the rating wasn't good enough for the production and broadcasting company to feel the need to make more.

As for the ending, the manga is still ongoing. Rumiko Takahashi (creator) is known for having some quite long stories and Inuyasha is one of them. She's still writing the story so we don't know how it will end or when she will actually end the story, so you'll just have to read the manga as it comes out untill it finally ends.

As for if the manga (comic books better then the anime) That's more of a preference to each person. Some enjoy it in motion while some enjoy reading it. The manga version is probably going to be better since it actually continues the story is is a bit more condenced in the storyline then the anime so is probably the best bet.

As for if they are going to make more episode, at this time it seems very unlikely. Just looking at the fact that the show went off air around close to 4 years ago, and nothing new has came out, is a good sign that the series is not popular enough to invest more money in by companies to create more stories. Generally unless the series stirred up the fan base enough to make companies feel the need to invest more into the series, they will leave it at just the manga. So, the answer to that is most likely there will not be any more anime episode and if by chance there were, the best bet would probably be a OVA (original video animation which is basically few episodes animated for just dvd/vhs release and not shown on TV) or a movie, but again since Inuyasha hasn't made much news in the anime community seems like if you want to continue with the show that you l ike, your best bet would be reading the manga.
