Communism has never existed...ever. No nation on this planet has ever been communist. Cuba is a Marxist-Leninist dictatorship. North Korea is a Stalinist dictatorship. Vietnam and China abandoned Marxism long ago and have embraced capitalism.

The truth is that there are many varieties of Communism and they all suck.
Soviet-style Communism remains in effect firmly in North Korea and Cuba and maybe a few other countries. Soviet-style has zero private investment.
Chinese-style Communism is in effect in China and Vietnam. Chinese-style has with foreign-only private investment.
Then there's the most dangerous Communism. The one that doesn't acknowledge itself. True Marxist Communism. It's quietly taking hold worldwide (and has been for a century, masquerading as Democracy) and has left numerous problems in its wake.
No true Democracy has welfare, "progressive" income taxes, social security, forced "public" education, or the nanny state, all of which are Marxist inventions that have taken hold even in the US. The "reforms" of Wilson and FDR, not to mention LBJ, were all miserable failures. But that's not to say that the Republicans are any better. They've adopted Marxism under the guise of "Compassionate Conservatism."
If you have any doubt of the true definition of Communism, find a copy of the "Communist Manifesto" and you'll find out just how much Communist utopianism has infiltrated even the United States.
By the way, the Pilgrims and Jamestown tried communism at first and later adopted Capitalism, so I guess that just about proves that Communism will never work.

Cuba and North Korea.
Chavez is trying to spread communism across the world using his billions of oil money.
Democrats in the US would like for this country to be turned into "nice" communism.
China is turning to capitalism slowly. But the people still have very little freedom.

Cuba, People's republic of China and North Korea are Communist States. However, China is moving toward a free market economy so the are Communist in name only.

Cuba remains communist. Five countries in Central and South American have left wing leaders, tho they're not technically communist, yet.
