No need to stop breastfeeding if you are feeling ill. Your body starts to produce antibodies to fight your cold. Those antibodies are passed on to your breast milk and you baby will benefit from the immunity boost the antibodies will provide. Your baby may show symptoms of your cold but they will be less in severity and breastfeeding will be the best medicine because of those antibodies passed on through your breast milk.....

No need to stop nursing. Baby is getting good immunity boosters from your breast milk. Take Vitamin C yourself, and baby will get some from your milk. I just got a cold, and continued to nurse. Baby got it too, but then again, all of my 5 children got it too. However, it was very mild, and baby only had it for 3 days...continued to nurse and baby got the good Vitamin C in my milk. Baby cannot get the cold from your milk. Just wash your hands a lot, and cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze (then wash your hands again) and baby may not get it at all :-) I've nursed for 11 years, and never stopped because of an illness - even when I had the flu and fever, just tucked baby right down in bed along side me, and we both rested together :-)

I think it is okay to breastfeed your baby. When I was breastfeeding my son, I heard that the immunity that the mother gets (when you get a cold)--goes to your baby through the breast milk--so your baby will be fine...The breastmilk is most natural and will also give your baby the strongest chance of fighting the cold/flu...will give your baby the best immunity...

The flu virus is not transmitted through the mother's breast milk but antibodies against diseases are which is will benefit your baby. However, a breastfeeding mother can transmit the flu virus to her baby because of the close contact with the baby, so take precautions.

You should keep nursing. Your baby was exposed to whatever you have before you ever had symptoms. It is best for you to keep breastfeeding. Your baby will get antibodies to whatever it is that you have through the milk. This will help keep baby from getting ill. If the baby does get sick, it is likely to be less severe than whatever you have.

I don't think that the breastfeeding itself will give baby your cold. The air you share with him while you nurse is the more likely cause. Just be sure to talk to you dr about what medications it is safe to take while breastfeeding, as many are secreted in breasmilk.

I agree with hollyberry. Your body will pass on any antibodies it creates and this will only strengthen your child's immune system. If your child does catch what you have, he/she will already have a head-start to fighting it off.

Breastfeeding actually gives them antibodies they wouldn't get from formula that would help prevent them from getting sick. Natural protection!!

Don't stop!! I breasfed my baby when I was sick and never had him catch anything I got!!!
