Hello Ms. Vickisanz,
If you are able to get your hands on a copy of a Rand-McNally Video Tour DVD from your local library or bookstore your questions may be answered. I remember purchasing one for my father years ago before he died. It was the one place he always wanted to visit and it was of great comfort for him to know that he could still visit in his immagination room once he entered the advanced stages of his illness and became confined to a sick bed.You can also visit www.gulliversusa.com/1143591 as they would have good suggestions for you also. And there is even a new Toll Free number you can call at 866-807-7386 if you need to talk to a real knowledgable expert who give you immediate answers to all your travel questions.
Enjoy Yourself and God Bless!!!

G'day,
As the first answerer mentioned, the websites have lots of info abt Melbourne. If you stay in the CBD area, then you may want to visit the Information Centre (Cnr. Swanston and Little Collins Streets) or RACV shop, where it has the booklets that you can take away with you (most of them for free).
Depending on how you want to go, you may want to rent a car, You may also want to contact the local daytour travel agent (eg. AAT Kings - weblink included). Again, if you stay in CBD area, they are on Swanston street, between Bourke & Little Bourke Streets.
In Melbourne itself unfortunately not alot. Some of them that you may be interested are as follows:
1. Rialto Towers
2. Crown Casino
3. Royal Botanical Garden and Shrine of Remembrance
Outside Melbourne... alot. Some of my recommendations as follows:
1. Gold mining cities of Bendigo and Ballarat. Ballarat has Sovereign Hill, which is created to look like what it was during the gold rush era.
Personally I prefer Bendigo, where you can actually visit a still working gold mine. There's a nice Chinese museum & garden. On the way to Bendigo you can also visit Hanging Rock.
2. Great Ocean Road
3. Phillip Island to see Fairy Penguin. Just remember to bring winter clothing
Those are some of my recommendations. Good luck and have a good time. Welcome to Melbourne!
