They seem to have Matsuzaka on contract for 6 years. They will make up their bid money with new revenue out of Japan, pure and simple.

And for longer than 6 years, as well as tv rights, they will sell Matsuzaka jerseys, but more than that. Ortiz jerseys. You telling me people won't become fans of boston, support a great hitter like Ortiz?

The bid money was the Red Sox's way into Japan, to grow their business, and make money for the rest of time.

Forget the Bid money, they will get it back, hundreds of times over in the next 20 years.

So.. they are paying 52-60million dollars for 6 years of a quality pitcher. Even if he turns out to be average, that is still a good deal given what contracts Meche, Lilly, Eaton and co are signing.

Will they reach the world series? who knows. Schilling, Matsuzaka, Papelbon, Beckett, Wakefield/Lester is a quality rotation, the bullpen is a bit of a concern for Sox fans, the lineup is looking pretty good.

It will depend on how the team comes together.

Alrighty all you BO sox fans.

You call the Yankee's the Evil Empire and say how bad we are for buying up the Talent. Take a look in the Mirror. But also with that is a curse. We have gotten a lot of talent and still havent been able to win the big one. How many times have we seen good Jap Talent get wasted. (what about Ishi and Kaz Matsui) there were all the next big thing and never panned out. Hell our Matsui isnt the best OF like he was supposed to be hitting 40 homers and 150 rbi's. Now with the signing of the Pitcher they will have to trade Manny otherwise they are going to kill there payroll (which could top the yankee's) Getting rid of Manny will put the Red Sox in the number 2 hole.

Good job Red Sox you will pay more money to be a #2 team behind the yankee's again.

No, I don't think they paid to much for Matsuzaka. They are only paying him about 8.6 million a year. They would have had to pay Clemens 25 million to pitch for them next season. Even if you add on the other 52 million that they will have to pay his former Japanese team, they are still only paying him around 17.5 million a year. 7.5 million less than Clemens and probably Matsuzaka will be just as effective. I think in a long run Matsuzaka will be a major sign for the Sox. I don't know if the Red Sox will reach the World Series now, but they will definitely be better. There is a lot that can happen between now and October like injuries, so it will be hard to tell if the Sox can make it to the World Series, this early.

It's unusual circumstances, what with the posting fee and all, but it's not a bad deal. Everyone in baseball likes D-Mat a lot as a staff ace. He's getting less than $10 million per year, plus incentives, for six years. Heck, Jeff Suppan supposedly wants to be paid about that, and he's been merely OK for most of his career. (For further reference, see Ted Lilly.)

The Red Sox still need a closer, but they certainly have some bats and arms. D-Mat, Beckett and Papelbon are all under 27 and can throw, so that's a pretty good start for a team that could contend for years. Ortiz-Ramirez-Drew is a great middle of the order. I don't know if they are ready for the World Series -- health and the bullpen probably will determine that -- but they are improved.

Depends on how you look at it. Considering the Cubs gave Jason Marquis $21 million over three years, I don't think so. Everybody is overpaying, so you have to overpay to compete. With that said, the Red Sox need more than just one good pitcher to make it past the Yanks.

Yes way to much money for someone that hasn't even thrown a pitch in the mlb. No, one pitcher does not give a team that didnt make the playoffs that much of a boost to win the ws.

Yes, They spent stupid money for an unproven pitcher who in my opinion does not guarantee them squat. But you know sox fans will still talk about how the Yankees buy their championships but I let them talk because they are just a bunch of retards.

I agree they did overpay. And usually Asian pitchers wont live up
to expectations.Ex: Nomo,Park,Seo.But if he does do a decent job,and he is the best Japan pitcher for years,Boston will have the
best rotation in majors(Schilling,Beckett,Wakefield,Papelbon).And
their chances of beating NYY and Detroit is good.

Yep and Nope. Pretty funny the posting fee is almost as much as his enitre contract. And people that say they will make the money up in revenue, no they won't. They will have the same revenue as last year and the extra 51.1 mill on matsuzaka, so yeah they are wasting their money. Mariners bid under 15 mill for Ichiro and he's the best player in Japan.
