Collins wrote this about the anger he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea in 1979. He was so devastated that he left Genesis for a short time.
Collins explains the lyrics, "If you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand," by saying the drowning is symbolic
It's easier to believe the idea of shaming someone through a song, then the boring truth of just getting back at the ex!
After all that.. it is a brilliant song, and the drums in it give me chills every time I hear it. Collins tranfers his anger for his ex and punishes his skins for his sanity!

According to him, it was written during his divorce period and it was about his anger. According to the below website, this is a direct Collins quote: “I don’t know what this song is about. When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it’s obviously in anger. It’s the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation. So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, ‘Did you really see someone drowning?’ I said, ‘No, wrong’. And then every time I go back to America the story gets Chinese whispers, it gets more and more elaborate. It’s so frustrating, ‘cos this is one song out of all the songs probably that I’ve ever written that I really don’t know what it’s about, you know.”

It is an awesome song.

I heard that the story was about Phil Collins watching his mate drown under ice when he was young and a man stood by and did nothing.....and then he encountered him at one of his concerts years later.........or is this just romantic bs?

It is a great song and has one of the most recognized and iconic drum fills of all time. Apparently there was no thought put into it either, he just did it one day and recorded it...pretty cool.

Many girls break up with their significant others, is because they need time to figure things out. Don't take it personally, if you want her back, you have to show her you can help her. If you love her then you'll let her go, that's it. Not everybody who you date in high school you end up staying with, the chances are extremely unlikely. So if she doesn't want to, then you need to let her go.
