You need to be more specific about your situation- how old is your son? Who is answering the phone? Whatever the situation may be, it sounds like he doesn't want to talk to you or else he'd call back or just take the call during dinner.

What not have problems with his wanting that time with his family. They should be his first concern. Would have problems is he is not returning the calls. Next time tell them OK, you will call back in 30 minutes, and to enjoy the meal. Then call back.

Was it dinner time when you called?. I once loaned my car to a relative and when they did not return it on time i called the house and was told he was eating, i told this person that he would have to leave his meal and return my car as i needed to use it, it did not go down well but my car was returned immediately and that was the end of that.

That depends. Is he a child and at a friends house with the friends parent asking if he can call you back, or is he an adult, with his wife or girlfriend asking if he can call you back? If he's at a friends house, you should be bothered. Demand to talk to your son. However, if he's an adult, let him be.

Yes, I would be annoyed because you are his parent not another friend and you're entitled to more respect. I wouldn't allow him to go over there anymore for dinners unless the rules change.
