paint-American Paint Horse Assoc, only paints, paints x/qtr or paints x/tb maybe registered. referred to as a color also.
pinto-National Pinto Horse Assoc, anything of paint coloration that is not allowed into the APHA. also can be registered as breeding stock with no color is one parent is a paint or pinto as long as there is registration papers from an assoc. can also be referred as a color.
palomino-American Palomino Horse Assoc, horses can be registered based on color alone, the more other assoc paperwork to prove breeding/heritage the better for horse and owners to prove where the horse has come from. referred as a color also. this color can be present in just about any breed, however there are some exceptions that this color will never appear in, ie:Friesans, Lippizans etc.
so hope this clears things up for you. when talking to different people in the horse world some people will refer to paints across the board even if they are really a pinto. good luck

Paint is a breed of horse. It has to have either both parents being paints or one parent a paint and the other eitheer a quarter horse or thoroughbred. Pinto is a color---it doesn't matter what the parents are it has to have the appropriate coloring. Palamino is a color. You can have any breed of horse be a palamino.

The American Paint Horse is a breed - stock horse build, pinto coloring.
Pinto coloring is solid with large patches of white or white with large patches of solid. It is a color, while "Paint" is a breed.
Palomino is a color as well, not a breed, although there is a Palomino registry, I think. Palominos can be many breeds. Pintos can be more than one breed as well.

Paint/pinto are both a breed and color. Theyare a registered breed and also a color. You could have a paint qh that means that it's a qh with paint coloring. Palominos are the same. You can have a palomino qh that just means it's a qh with palomino coloring. It is confusing but there are breed registries.

A Paint is a breed of horse. A Pinto is a color of horse, but there are registries for horses that have pinto color. A palomino is also a color of horse, and there are also registeries for horses that are palomino.

My poms: Show lines. Why? because those are the only ones that health test and try to breed to the standard and most of them (that I know) also breed for good temperaments. There is not much work for a pom to do. My GSD's (I don't have one right now but I will get another soon). Working lines. They are physically and mentally more sound. Also, the Show Shepherds are caricatures of the standard and extremes that the breed founders never meant for it to be. My Ideal is a sound, dog with the drives that it was created for still intact that is also a great looking dog. Unfortunately now there is too great a divide in many breeds.

Horses can be 'double registered' - as their breed & for their color. Pinto is any spotted horse, paint is if it is a registered/registerable breed of spotted horse (generally Quarter Horses). Palominos are the same, and most that are double registered are also Quarter Horses.
Ineteresting facts: there are several different types of patterns of paints/pintos , and some horses that appear to be palominos aren't - there are very specific rules about the shades of colors & mixture of gold to white hairs, and ones that fall short are then called other colors, such as strawberry roan (if too much white), etc. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Paint_Horse & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palomino

Palominos are both colors and breeds.

Paint: breed of horse
Pinto: a coloring of ANY breed (Pintabian, a pinto saddlebred...etc)
Palomino: breed of horse, AND a color. the palomino's registry book is gigantic, you should check out the website and read about it...it's really interesting.
