Actually the nicotinic receptors in the brain are the same ones that are damaged by alzhiemers. There are studies that show that people who smoke or smoked for many years are less likey to be diagnosed with alzhiemers later in life. Also those who are diagnosed with alzhiemers smoking tends to slow the progression of the disease. Researchers have been attempting to find ways of Making Nicotine non addictive and in a form that could act as a vaccine of sorts against alzheimers.
I don't know who told you that Smoking causes brain damaged but they really didn't know what they were talking about. Smoking causes lung damage however Nicotine does not fry brain cells like alcohol and what not.

Go to a university library ask them if they can show you how to use the program Psych info. Its a search engine for psychological and medical peer reveiwed journals. Since smoking kills off brain cells , it would depend how long and how much smoking one does .Many die from other side-effects from smoking , so they don't live long enough to suffer severe brain cell loss . Observe that those who have been smoking an extraordinary long time , are not thinking too clearly , as they once were . One example is the fact that they think cigarettes are a good thing .

every child that is born to a woman who smoked during pregnancy is born with reduced intelligence (not to mention all the other affects known to be caused!)
the child does not grow as much in utero as children born to nonsmoking women, and lower birth weight would also mean the brain weighs less;
low birth weight is the single biggest indicator of intelligence and of health problems now and in the future

Degree of damage depends on the intake quantity .
