If you are currently using Windows Media Player, try using InterVideo WinDVD. It worked for me.

But then, that might not work after all. I had another computer, and it was still jerky in InterVideo. Really the best solution would be to buy a "dedicated" READ drive. What I mean is that it shouldn't be able to WRITE DVDs or CDs, but only read them. I was able to get a good one for a great price because I had room for an internal drive. Obviously, internal is not an option for a laptop, but still see what you can find.

Sounds like the laser lens is simply dirty and needs to be cleaned. The laser uses different wavelengths to read cd's than dvd's, so it is not u ncommon to be able to read one and not the other.

try using a different media player and don't move the computer when you are watching a movie set it on a flat place.
