Are you joking? Is this a serious question? There's only one choice my friend - Audi all the way. That little S-Line badge means a hell of a lot - especially compaired to the se badge...

The cars are well matched on every aspect but performance - you're almost talking about M3 level with the S-Line.

The Audi outclasses all comers in interior quality and build quality and even in exterior looks - it has a squat, low to the ground feel about it, similar to the R32.

My last A3 lasted for 198,000 miles. It may well still be going with the next owner.

And if none of this convinces you, maybe this will. BMW have an awful image. Traditionally the preserve of middle class, tory middle England. Keeping up with the Jones' and washing and waxing on a sunday afternoon.

Audi just won Le Mans.

And that's without even mentioning the (M5 killer) RS4...

I hope I've helped you make the right decision, welcome to the club!!!

Judging by the way you set your question, I can tell you don't like BMWs...

But I'll give you MY own view on these 2 cars.

In terms of design, the 3 series has just won hands down, as the 3 series has a better Touring design, and the A3 seems kinda old.
In terms of engine performance, the A3 has won as it's diesel engine has a turbo backup, whilst the 3 series uses only a Naturally Aspirated engine.
In terms of practicality, the 3 series would be better for it's a sedan, with more rear accomodation and boot space unlike the A3 hatch.
In terms of functionality, the 3 series would be better for it's more user friendly unless the A3 has a MMI (Audi's patented Mulit-Media Interface, like BMW's patented iDrive unavailable in the 3-series.)

All in all, the 3 series offers better maintainence, which is good for long term owning.

So, I hope you would go for the 3 series. But if you can afford the 330i, don't hesitate, not even a bit!

All depends what is important to you. The Audi's performance is better than the BMW but interior room is tighter on the Audi, so if you have kids you better take them with you when you test drive the Audi to make sure they all fit comfortably in the back seat.... good luck!
