The heart of Silicon Valley is the region extending northeast from San Jose Airport, between roughly the Caltrain railroad tracks and Hwy 101, up as far as Charleston Rd. at the southern end of Palo Alto. And the northern half of Cupertino probably should be included as well. But there are also plenty of other little high-tech industrial districts scattered around Santa Clara County and the southern end of Alameda County.

Silicon Valley is an informal name given to an area sort of centered around north San Jose or Santa Clara, California.
It's about 50 miles south (south-east) of San Francisco and Oakland, around the base of the San Francisco bay. The valley's true name is Santa Clara valley. The area is also known to locals as "the South Bay."

It was once the center of semiconductor ("chip") manufacturing. And since at that time most semiconductors were based on silicon technology, the area was refered to by that name.
