The best conversations are about other people. So ask a lot of questions, and listen to the answer before asking another one.
Don't tap your foot waiting for them to answer so you can put in your 2 cents. Be a listener and you will have lines of people waiting to talk to you.
Be a talker, and people will humor you until they can escape.
So, are you going to watch the meteor shower?
Are you good in all subjects or just this one?
Would you vote for Barack if you could?
Why? Why not?

Connect something that is important to the other person and sort of make them feel good. That way people are more likely to talk to you.
