I would like to develop a habit. I want to become a neat freak. The problem is, I pretty much hate cleaning up and my version of clean is not all that clean. How do I become a neat freak and how long will it take? Is it even possible?
When I think about cleaning and begin too, I get bored and lazy and just give up...I can't seem to finish once I start. I have even done one room and then will start on another room the next day, but by that time, I have messed up the first room again...Any suggestions...

the way to develop a habit is to repeat the behavior over and over for about 30 days.. :o)

I honestly don't know and if you saw my house you'd know that. But one hint a friend gave me that has helped, is to do little bits of jobs, don't look at the whole thing. And you can learn to do them during otherwise wasted time. Examples: while waiting for something to heat in the microwave, wash a few dishes and don't feel bad about not doing them all; don't sit through commercials, get up and put a few things away; (Or before you sit down to watch TV, go through the room and put everything that's out of place in a box, then clean out the box during commercials.) Learn to see cleaning in small or even tiny steps. It's way easier than cleaning an entire room and it helps you to develop the habit of putting things away. I'm not sure why. Check out "FlyLady .net. too.

It depends on how old you are. But it's very hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Behavior is ingrained in your neural pathways. You can develop new behaviors from a life changing incident. Or I suppose if you made it a regular part of your day to clean everything all the time, then eventually (maybe) this will become a habit.

Developing a habit is slang for having an addiction. To substances usually, so wrong word choice I think. It's a euphemism. If you want to get inspired to clean, just race yourself, try and finish it in time limits or even take breaks in between. I'm terrible with cleaning too :D

The theory goes....if you want to make something into a habit, do it for 21 days in a row without fail and it will become second nature to you after that.
