Latitude lines run East-West and tell you how far North or South of the equator you are.
They "look" like parallel horizontal lines on a map or circling the globe like belts (largest at the equator, getting smaller towards the poles) - they don't exist in real world situations.

Latitude lines go across the globe- they are verticle lines. Longitude lines are like they sound- they go long ways down the globe. Hope this was a simple help for ya! :)

They are considered parallel ,horizontal lines to the equador, which is a reference in dividing the two hemispheres, north and south.
Significantly are the Tropic of Capricorn(where I live it passes thru the city,about24 degrees south),and the Tropic of Cancer opposite ,to about 24 degrees north. If you read the complete stories of Jules Verne, like TRravel to North Pole,Travel to the South you will learn a lot. That´s how I was introduced to them when I was about14yrs.
