I'm thinking old board games like chess for an obvious example. There are examples in the board game section of this website http://www.mastergames.com they are all well made out of fine woods and i'd like to own one but need to know which are really any good to play! I've played chinese chess on the computer before and that seemed better than normal chess.

Backgammon. Looks superb and is a good combination between analysis of risk, rules and an element of gambling if you wish. The gameplay is very scalable to experience. Excellent game.

We enjoy Railway Rivals. You have to build track & then race your trains. It was made by Games Workshop ages ago but you might be able to get it on ebay. Trivial Pursuit is good fun if there are a lot of you & you've had a drink or two. Scrabble & Monopoly are worth having. I also like Trionimos & Yahtzee. A pack or 2 of playing cards is good for all sorts of games & you can have fun with just pencil & paper playing Battleships or Consequences.

RISK is a great game, but requires more luck than strategy.

There is a great board game called DIPLOMACY which requires complete strategy, with no dice or cards to rely on. It takes hours to play though, and is no fun with less than 4 people.

Real mah jong. And not that "Mah jong solitaire" crap that those Westerners devised as an insult to the integrity of this 1000 yr.+ game.
