I'm 19, but I look like I am 12. People treat me like a little girl all the time, and when people find out that I am much older than twelve, they treat me like I'm mentally challenged or useless.

I am aware that I look younger, and I am aware that I am very socially awkward, but I'm not stupid, nor am I a little kid.

I don't understand how I am supposed to act, or how I am supposed to dress, to make people understand that I am not a little kid, and that I am at least moderately intelligent and capable of taking care of myself in public.

How do I get people to treat me like a competent nineteen-year-old?

I am 19 also and constantly mistaken for a 16 year old. Part of my reason is that I do not wear makeup, but I hate the stuff. I am also socially awkward. You need to dress like a young woman and not a little girl...instead of buying clothes in the Junior's department look for clothes in the Misses department. You also need to hold your head high, let people know who you are! You need to force yourself to come out of your shell. You will, in time, not be so socially awkward. I hope this helps. If you have more questions about this subject I would be happy to answer more.

It would require some work, but if you try to be less socially awkward, it can help you come off as a more mature person. Try reading those self esteem books or something, maybe they'll give you some ideas. another way is to develop a good vocabulary; it would give you more confidence when you meet new people.

People will treat you how they want to - you need to care less about what they think and just continue to be true to yourself. I'm in my 30's and I'm constantly being told I look younger. I hate it when people talk to me as if I don't have some life experience behind me, but I've gotten used to it. Someday you'll appreciate it when someone thinks you're younger than you are :)

Good luck!!

It takes time, be a little more serious perhaps with regards to work and life goals etc. Keep your sence of humor and still have fun of course.

As for dress and appearance, just be yourself. I find that to work the best.

One has to give respect to get respect. in your situation don't put yourself down, act positive with self confidence, join in with their conversations and show them what you're made of.
