Because, as a computer geek at heart, the way to diagnose computer problems is to do nothing but troubleshoot. THat is if you have never heard of the problem before. Most of the time, you spend most of your time trying to locate the source of the problem rather than actually fixing it. Also run ning diagnostic during the troubleshooting phase can normally take some time. I hope I helped!

I am guessing you mean problems with computers that humans have to solve, not mathematic problems etc that computers are used to find solutions for.
Some problems are more complex than others. Computers have a lot of parts and functions that are related and connected to each other in many many ways, so sometimes a problem has an obvious reason and therefore solution. Sometimes, on the other hand, the cause for some problem is unbelievably far-fetched. Then you can pretty much only use trial and error to find it.
Also sometimes you have several separate problems, but before you figure them out cannot tell what behavior is due to what problem. These situations can be very confusing and can lead a person astray for a long time..

Well, to be honest, it isnt all that very hard, but sometimes customers make it more difficult then they should, so what it equates to is you end up paying for a persons time.
Why -- because you will have those people that will try reping things themselves and that creates the most problems as they do things out of the ordinary that have an effect on different areas of the computer.
But problems are pretty easy to solve, just change out whatever component is giving you problems, and for all system problems just restore it -- thats not hard at all.
Trying to find out what cause the problem is where all the effort comes down to, so that your customer doesnt keep returning again and again.
Heck, Id love to just format drives all day, just reinstall systems and replace components all day..
That would make my life so much easier
But certain factors like preserving data, not having a restore disk or drivers backed up, and what not - those can create issues.
Most of the time at places like Best Buy and the like, you are paying too much for services. When I worked for them many many moons ago 10 years+, they were format crazy. Anything wrong. just reformat it - because that was the easiest solution.
Now that they have the geek squad dont know if that changed their practices, but looking at what they charge for some of their stuff, seems like the same ol to me.
But all in all its not hard fixing a computer, its a matter of it being more time consuming a task than anything
Because some people just jack up their machine or get 'creative' with their operating system thats what makes things more difficult.
Oh, and lets not even get into some of the ompatibility problems and the failure of people keeping their systems and drivers up to date.

why some {insert domain} problems are more difficult to solve than others?
E.g. why some math problems are more difficult to solve than others? why some car maintenance problems are more difficult to solve than others?
I think you know the answer to this question.

Well, that's easy. For instance if you need to solve a no POST situation much more troubleshooting is needed than say POST, no boot. Different hardware can cause diferent issues. If you are referring to software/driver issues that's a whole other realm entirely.

I think the hardest part is the software because it has bugs in it. Windows is not perfect that's why there are service packs to update it. Another problem is virus and spyware, it can do strange things to your computer.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
