It is a very fine line indeed. So where does ambition stop and greed begin? They both exist because they are evidently different from each other. If they weren't different we would not hold two separate definitions. Difference is the base on which all knowledge is founded. How would you know that a car is a car and a rock is a rock. You would compare them. In comparison you would observe qualities that one possesses and the other does not, thus giving definition to the inquiry.
So what exactly is the difference between the two. This is arguable because the answer is subjective. One's definition of the difference between the two certainly can be different from another's. Therefore I can only give you my answer. I define ambition as a process of innovation that we have used to get as far as we have come today. Greed is using that which was meant to advance the whole of society and taking advantage of a position inside the innovation in the interest of personal gain. In other words taking more than their share of the pie. It seems to me that there is something inherent in the nature of the acqusition of power, that allows this power of greed to take over the person seeking it. When they seek power, are they really seeking greed?
I don't feel that ambition can exist without greed, they are both necessary. If there was no greed, how could we look upon greed with contempt. It all really goes with the whole idea that if evil didn't exist, would we appreciate the good. To answer the last part of the question, I think that the whole idea of being here is to advance our knowledge. Would you really want us to just pack it in and call it a day? To me that just isn't logical for human beings, we are concious beings after all. Thanks for the question, it is one of my favs.

i disagree that "very few people are ambitious,,,,,,,," i think many people are ambitous and have specific goals in mind
and i dont think as many people are greedy as you imply,,,,,, and just want more and more of the same thing, which would be a excessive desire,,,,,,,and as to what a person deserves or needs,,,, only that person can define their needs,,,, and i would say a person deserves to have the material things they can afford, either threw their own hard work, or else money from their parents/spouse

because it called our EGO. our EGO make us thinking about ours self before anyone. Why is it worng to be Greed? i find that greed is a good think. the reason it because do we have to give people on the street money if they don't want to work. They can work like we work for a wags. I life the people on the street use the money to buy drugs so in this case it okay to be greed. I also thing that it in our nature.

If we weren't greedy, as a species we would become stagnant and die off. Greed pushes us to our next accomplishment and the next achievement that makes our world grow and become better.
Granted- yes, there is a fine line between when greed is good and when it becomes harmful but gratefulness leads to complacency.

We Americans are programmed by society to go for the gold and be consumers our whole lives. We can learn a lot from cultures who revere not money but family, morals and self-respect. You can't live this in the U.S. That's why I left and am assimilating into a culture with different values.
