I have know some people from Minessota and Nort Caroline, and when I asked something like this, they just tell me "All at south of USA are latin-america countries, and they are latins"

If latin-america means american talking a language that as Latin as base... then, USA are latinAmericans too... we have the same BASE language!

Maybe we should find another fancy way to call them... like Hispanic-Americans... that could work better.

What is they real problem here?

This is strictly my opinion here but the reason is simple. The U.S.A. is a country, Canada is a country, Mexico is a country, Brazil is a country, etc. People from each country refer to themselves as belonging to that country not the continent---Canadian, Mexican, Brazilian, American (and yes we do shorten it). We do refer to our Hispanic population as Hispanic-American just as we do any other origin like African American and Irish American. Personally I think that divides us as a nation and we should all be American. That is my explanation, but I am sure that I will be further educated by another!

I understand what you are saying and it irritates me to.
No one would think of calling someone from Brazil an American.
They say in South America the country of Brazil.
However the United States is so well know that it is in North America that I don't even think they need that. Just say USA
That seems to work for everyone. Because there is Mexico, Baja california, Canada! None of these are in the United States.
An American can be someone from Columbia.
