Was Thomas Jefferson really trying to end slavery, or was he really just contradicting himself? After all he did own slaves himself..

No, he didn't want to end slavery, because he didn't like to sleep alone.

Although many of the people back then like Thomas Jefferson didn't totally agree with the notion of slavery the weren't totally against either. They were too worried that their public image would be tarnished.

well he did write in the declaration to end slavery but the souther state deleted the paragraph, and on the other had he did contradict himself many of times, all men are created equal as long as your where not female, or a slave , and weal it's quite sad to see such a great man who spoke so great about liberty to not free next to none of his slaves except the hemmings slaves.

Define commitment. Actions speak louder than words, and Jefferson's utterances in opposition to slavery could be classified as mere lip service.

Many of the founders has slaves. A lot of them were not comfortable with it. (Washington allowed his slaves to be freed upon his death.) But they were concerned about the economic consequences, as well as a breakup of the union.
