I think they study why people steal, where to look for fingerprints, and I think it has something to do with being a mall cop. It falls under the sociology banner. And just look at the wonderful things that sociology has done for us. BTW using the sociological method, all the criminologists I have met are idiots, so there is a positive correlation between lack of brain cells and being a criminologist. Just my observations.

Whoever says it is a branch of psychology is partially, but not completely correct. Although there is clearly a significant input from psychology, the more enduring and powerful influence has been from sociology. As such, criminology recognises that any crime related causal patterns - those addressing offending, victimisation, punishment etc. (importantly NOT just offending) - have to take into account the social context and structural influences on the individual. This makes it a SOCIAL science. What you need to decide is whether the epistimology and methodology of a social science makes it a type of science, or something distinct.

It is and I am actually studying it.
It is a relatively new branch of science. I guess I would compare it to sociology, it just has a different angle on society. Instead of studying the society as a whole, it just focuses on the certain group within the society--peole who commit crime.
It is not the same as forensic science though. I often hear people confuse those two. Whenever I say I study criminology, most people ask me if I am going to be a SCI. I find it quite funny.
So yes, it is a science.

Criminology is the application of the scientific method to crime and justice. They don't just slap an -ology onto the back of something and call it a science, they have to use the scientific method.

criminology is a science as much as psychology is a science. Anything that is researched with the rigour of scientific method can be a science - that's what I say!

yes, anything that is determined to deal with society is considered to be a form of social science. They teach this in sociology. Its dealing with the behaviors of individuals under differing circumstances. So the simple answer is yes.

As Maureen Lipman said in the old BT adverts upon hearing her grandsons exam results, "you get an 'ology' - you're a scientist"

most certainly.. ok, so its not rocket science, but undrestanding and addressing issues raised is all based on understanding humanity.. why do kids do crime? why is recidivism rife? why doesnt the penal system work... why why why...and we, are required to have the answers... just like the incidents happening in Ipswich...
