Most companies only ask in your application if you have ever been convicted of a felony, and even if you have it doesn't always mean they won't hire you. People make mistakes, don't get discouraged. Good for you for trying to do what's best for yourself and your daughter.

There are jobs that will hire even if you do have a record; I'd focus on some of those, and not even worry about the background check. If you stole, apply for jobs that don't require trusting you around valuable stuff... if you beat up somebody, find a job that you can do which won't involve interacting with other people too much... look for jobs where the employer won't have to assign you a lot of trust in the area you had trouble with. If you minimize the risk that your potential employer would be making, you can pretty much flat out tell them what you did and say you'd prefer to avoid being in the same position with the same temptations and opportunities and stuff. If it's something unavoidable, then letting them know about your record will itself give the appearance that you've changed your life around and can own up to your past and stuff. Many other people have police records too, and you can probably get a job just as easily as any of the others do... if you still have trouble, find a placement company and get them to find you a job; I guarantee they'll have already helped someone in the same position as you, and will know which ones are alright.

This is a REAL job where there is no background checks!
I am a single mother as well as a full time college student and I work at home. This has been a great opportunity for me because I do not have a lot of time on my hands. Check out the website listed below and it just might suit your needs as well. I wish you the best!

Most likely there won't be a background check for a waitress position unless it's for a hotel chain with a restaurant or an upscale restaurant or a casino. If it's a little small town restaurant you should be fine.

Go to a staffing company like SOS. They work with a lot of different companies and often can get you placed without an interview. I live in Utah, and know that staffing companies are really busy.
