-It is one of the greenest of the Arab countries

-It has landscape like few other countries (mountains in the West, beaches to the North and East, Sahara desert to the South, and plains in the midland)

-It is one of the most Europeanized of the Arab countries, still taking it's cue from France in everything from dress to politics. (Tunisia was ruled by France until 1956)

-It was one of the first countries in the world to give women equal rights and the right to vote.

-While the official language is Arabic, their native language is a complete mixture of both French and Arabic - both languages are used in any given sentance.

-Tunisia's former President Bourguiba became the first Arab leader publicly to advocate mutual recognition with Israel.

-The president is elected to 5 year terms with no term limits. The last election was October 2004 and the next one will be in October 2009.

and you're both wrong.

Tunisia is not an island and plenty of women wear hijab in Tunisia (and turkey too). Perhaps you mean gov't workers and students aren't allowed to? I know that's the case in Turkey, don't know about Tunisia.

What's unique about Tunisia..

1. Its former President, Habib Bourguiba, did not support Ramadan. Can't imagine a leader of a Muslim country doing that anywhere else. "A modern nation cannot afford to stop for a month every year," he once said, drinking orange juice on television during Ramadan.
2. Its capital is the same name as the country (in arabic at least)
3. It was one place where Yassir Arafat lived and not forced out later on.
4. El-Jem coliseum. Can't find anything like it elsewhere in North Africa nor anywhere outside Italy I believe.

They are only one of two Muslim countries that do not allow women to wear Hajib. (Turkey is the other one I believe)

My neighbors who are from there make the BEST food and are really really cool people
