I agree with Drew's post. The intent of modern art has so much to do with context, and how it compares to someone else's art that came before, that if you don't know anything about the context of the modern art scene as a whole, then you'll never know what the artist's point was.

But even if you do study a lot about modern art, and you understand it, if you prefer different kinds of art, then I totally agree that a lot of it could look like crap.

Turst your instincts.
If so called art requires an academic degree or training to appreciate, then it's an academic exercise, not art. Real art communicates and appeals to most people, who see beauty and respond to it. Real art isn't moving as far away from reality as you can so that your viewer can't recognize what he or she is looking at. That's a parody of art, unrealized art, and a con job, as is most modern art. I realize modern artists have a perfect right to paint as they wish, but to call it art is a con. Maybe call it wallpaper or a table cloth.
And to the person who wrote: "In short, how art 'looks' has changed, probably forever, and beauty isn't really the point anymore." Oh really. Is that so in nature too? Is happiness not the point anymore too?
Listen, there are thousands of good artists writing, drawing, painting art that sells and is cherished by people through the USA and the world. And it's beautiful. You just have to look in the right places.

Your problem is a common one. Many feel that "the emperor has no clothes," and that appreciators of modern art are fooling themselves. It's an attractive idea, because it would mean that you, and probably your friends, are smarter than a lot of very educated people. Cool, right?

Unfortunately most of what you see in museums and in the reputable galleries is quite good. In general, art has become less accessible over the last century, and now much of the canon is indecipherable to newcomers. It has ceased to be self-evidently brilliant; now it requires context and prior knowledge. In short, how art "looks" has changed, probably forever, and beauty isn't really the point anymore.

Well, when you say crap, what do you mean?
There are many art styles, and going back to impressionism or surrealism, minimalism, .... there are so many art "movements." Remember that many art movements were doing new things, and creating art works that were new at the time, and unseen before. Like Impressionism for example, critiques basically thought their paintings were 'crap' because they looked like blobs of color smashed together. Or minimalist artists, their works were a whole new idea or exploring feelings, emotions, colors, forms. Not every piece of art work is going to be realistic and life like. Now if you mean contemporary art like performance art or abstract art, you are simply looking at new ideas and different ways of expression. Not until you know the background of why the artist created it, what is behind it, or the meaning of it should you call it crap. Who knows? Maybe a piece of work is recognized and praised just because he/she is well known, not because of its quality, meaning, etc. It is most of the time up to the viewer to interpret art, and it's fine to judge it by your own taste. But it is always a good thing to look up and research what it is you are looking at to understand and know about it before you label. Until then, happy art exploring!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

This is DEFINITELY true with art. There are some paintings, sculptures, etc that are simply breathtaking. But there is a lot that looks like a 4 year old was tossing things around. I don't understand it either, except that we all have preferences and perhaps some of us just don't prefer the "crap".

I hate when people say a 12 year old could do it. Your 12 year old couldn't even think of it. Really, I wish someone would have their 12 year old kid try to replicate what artists are doing. Why don't you just buy some decorative art to put in your house and stop looking at art. Art is kind of it's own little world, and you have to keep up with it, as it progresses at a fast rate. It's just the nature of the beast.
and a note-modern art was a long time ago, todays art is called contemporary.

Oh god i totally agree. I really think some artists just grab a bucket of paint, dip their pets in it and then let them walk all over the canvas and call it art and sell it for 2 million dollars. I wouldn't pay 2 cents for most art in galleries right now. The old stuff was the best stuff.

Yeah, I guess I'd have to agree, but that's easy for me to say because I don't really understand the sensibilities behind art nor have I been taught how to appreciate it. I think it just takes a discerning eye and an educated perspective, but for those of us who don't have that, yeah, it looks like crap on the whole.

Some do others don't look around for ones that you like. That might help your take on art. By the way "looks like a 12yr.old could do it" that's mean i'm 12, and my art doesn't stink.
