The answer to your question is two fold. In 1863, Thomas Nast morphed the St Nicholas through the jolly elf stage of the German "Sankt Niklaus" (Sounds like Santa Claus) if you say it quick.
Then the jolly fat man we have grown to know and love was created first as Santa Claus in the 1920's and finally became the picture we see these days because of a series ofCoca Cola commercials beginning in 1935 by Haddon Sundblom and popularized even more by Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post covers.

St Nick (Sankt Nikolaus): Was born in the 3rd century. A little further in depth study, and you will learn a lot of how early Pagan traditions became symbolic in the Christianized/Protestant version of Christmas. Santa Clause on Christmas has no significance with Jesus Christ. The real holiday of X-mas is December 6 (day of his death) The amanita muscaria mushroom was very poisonous (German word for poison is gift) which grows only under guess what? A pine tree(X-mas tree). Santas elves revolve around the krampus (thought to be St Nicks nemesis by some and helper by others). The mushroom was also a drug if used in slight quantities. Reindeer who ate the mushroom were seen strangely leaping in the fields (flying reindeer).
Human use of the drug required it to be dried out. It was hung in a cloth sack by the fire place(stockings).

that depends.
in most of Europe anf maybe Asia, he is Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, or just Saint Nick. That tradition is so old that almost nobody remembers how old it is, if anybody at all.
I don't think anybody knows when he became Santa Claus
Also, in some parts of the world, people would put their wooden shoes by their doors and in the moring, their shoes would be full of goodies. Not all places do it that way anymore, but some do.

As far as the modern Santa goes, he came about in 1862 when Thomas Nast decided to change his colour from green to red. So that makes Santa (as we know him) 144 years old.

well as santa was ceated by coca cola im guessing about 100 years ish, however if you count similar figures such as Saint Nicholas then you need to go back a lot further to the scandinavian countries. Some have said it is a throwback to the Pagan Green Man in which case you are looking pre-christ.

scientific_boy has the right answer. There really was a guy in Europe who gave some gifts (supposedly money) to children and he's now dead. He became worshiped as a Saint, and rightfully so, I think. Merry Christmas.
