In African and South American jungles the tomtom drum is used as a means of communication and a way of guiding visitors through the jungle. As it is very difficult to navigate through the jungle the use of the tom tom makes it much easier. The manufacturers probably thought that this was a good comparison with their product so named it Tom Tom.

PS I've just bought one.

I would assume that the name comes from the native American drum a "tom tom". Aside from a musical instrument it was used as a telegraph system to send messages over a long distance. That's what TOM TOM does, send information over a long distance.

The Tom Tom was developed in Amsterdam, Holland. So perhaps those good folk around there thought it was a catchy name.
