Because at the time there were ignorant people that thought that Black people were less than human and didn't deserve to learn like Whites. As we see now that is not true and we are learning on the same level as everyone else.
Shame on them for being so hateful. For them to keep someone from learning based on their skin is shallow, hateful and wrong.
Thank God it isn't that way anymore

It's called racism honey. It wasnt right, but thats the way it was. White people thought black people werent good enough to go to school with white kids. We are slowly making progress to change things, but you have to open your mind and realize every person on this earth is equal in God's eyes.

Let's see here because people of the past (not all just mainly all) were stupid and for some reason were bothered by color, since they weren't ok with people being different they shunned them (again very stupid) at least today more and more people are coming around just not enough and at to slow of a pace

because white people felt they were better than black people. Which I think is wrong. Everyone is equal and should be treated as such. It's a shame though that there are still people out there that feel they are better than others.

Plessy vs. Ferguson, a Supreme Court decision, stated that facilities could be separate, but equal (obviously, it wasn't equal, but that's not the point)
It allowed for legal segregation and took Brown vs the Kansas Board of education to overturn THAT decision
