If you want to protect them against online stalkers and verbal abuse; none, probably NeoPets would be fine come to think of it.
Keep in mind that PEGI rate most EU games, so use these to judge their suitability, also keep in mind that for stuff like Central Station, (PS2), you have to be over 13 years of age.
All young children should be supervised when playing online games, and you should be prepared for a torrent of verbal abuse and obscenities, especially from "e-chavs" who believe that winning is everything, because they can't acheive anything IRL, these people will verbally abuse your child if they are beaten, and so forth.

Dragon Fable at dragonfable.com is a f2p(free to play) RPG with the option to pay for more features. This game is a better, newer version of adventure quest, that has the same look and feel, but plays differently, and more fluidly.

There's a problem because there's no way you can stop him going to unwated websites. For ten years old ummmmm try www.cartoonnetwork.com, www.nick.com, www.minicilp.com, and freeonlinegames.com Those are best suitible. Check them out yourself if you want too.

runescape is a game which is quite addicting and he will learn how to use and spend money. also all the games on mini clip are good for the 8+ range of kids these days also one game my sister is addicted on id club penguin where you are a penguin where you play games to earn money to buy things (it is better to become a member though because you can buy all the costumes.
