I am doing a school essay and can't find out how many colonies were formed for religious freedom (such as the Puritans colony, Boston I beleive) or had religious toleration (such as Maryland and the Act of Toleration).

1. Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay (two separate colonies which later combined)--It's a mistake to say that religious freedom had anything to do with the establishment of these colonies. They were protesting the practices of the Church of England; freedom of religion, or should I say freedom of conscience, played no part, as the Puritans ended up oppressing anyone who differed from their views.

2. Connecticut and Rhode Island--Formed basically as refuges for Massachusetts Bay dissenters.

3. Maryland--Formed as a bastion for Catholicism against Protestant intolerance.

4. Pennsylvania--Settled by the Quakers fleeing from the Church of England.
