Well I can't answer for everybody. For one thing, the general masses have always idolized a select group of people. Today they are celebrities, yesterday it was royalty, and before that they had emperors. There are a couple of reasons. One reason is the idea of escape, the promise of living vicariously through someone else's life, percieved to be more exciting or fulfilling than their own. After all, most of our lives are boring, at least in the sense that millions of other people live a lifestyle similar to ours. How many people own an island or fly to Italy for a weekend? In this way, we see them as living a fantasylike exclusive lifestyle that we will never get to experience. Another reason is entertainment. Sometimes I ask myself why I spend time on the internet or on Yahoo answers instead of being constructive (whatever that means). Sure I may learn something, but am I better for it? Do I act on the knowledge or do I just sit on it and say ,"oh thats cool." This same principle applies to most things we do for fun or diversion whether it be watching tv or playing video games. In this sense celebrity watching is just as legitimate as anything else you could do for fun. So why don't you get off the internet and start living?? (just playing btw)

The life of a celebrity is no different from the average person's life except they have fame and fortune. Besides being an celebrity, we marvel in everyone's lives, regardless if that person is famous or not. Don't you hear people gossiping about other's at your school or your job. It's the same thing, they're just not famous.

Because most people's lives are dull and mundane.
So when they see a celebrity being photographed in nice clothes, appearing in an expensive TV show, starring in a film, it appeals to the bored observer's imagination.
They think: if only my life was like that.
