Hello, My wife and I have a 4 year old and she loves balloons and my wife loves balloons but she will not let her pop balloons ever. She says that kids should respect their toys and that popping balloons is an aggressive violent act and it scares her and our daughter and it just is not a nice thing to do. My wife is the sweetest person in the world and I really had no opinion on this so my question to you all, Is my wife correct in this? She is an Angel and I believe in her, I just want to make sure we aren't weird by not letting Molly ever pop balloons. Thanks you.

Well If you wife is scared when the balloon is popped do it when she is not in the room. Your child Molly may get scared but you will be there to tell her there is nothing to be afraid of. You will also show her that if one breaks that it is only a balloon and that's what balloons do. They break. Your wife is TOTALLY wrong by saying that it is a act of violence I have never heard anything so silly in my life. Also a balloon is not a toy and a child should never be left unsupervised with one. Many children chock on balloons. I have never seen children laugh so hard as when they sit on the balloon to break it. Well us parents have a good laugh to especially when it happens to the other parent.
I hate to tell you this but yes your beautiful wife is weird when it comes to this... Happy popping.

I do not see how popping balloons is a bad thing. And in my opinion I do not think of it as a violent act. The only thing violent about it is that BIG popping sound. :] But then again, your wife IS the parent, and it is ultimately HER choice. But if your daughter does pop balloons just tell your wife to not get upset about it. It is not in any way not normal to do so. I have seen plenty of children pop balloons before. I myself have popped balloons as a child, and still do so if there is any around (rarely). It is a mere act of having fun, and I never thought of it as a violent act.

You said your wife is the sweetest person in the world. she probably is right because she doesn't like violence, but i think she exaggerated a little. I personally think there is nothing wrong with popping balloons.

Maybe your wife is right but kids don't always learn what they are supposed to learn when parents advice them or forbid them from doing something. Every child, and even grownups, have to make a mistake to understand what it means.

Now I'm not saying your wife is right about the issue cuz I think every child should be free to explore cuz it's a human nature. Just try to explain to her that it would be fun once in a while to do something different.

For example, if your child wants to skate, would you allow her? I mean you love her and don't wanna break her heart but there is also the chance of her falling down and getting hurt, so what I'm trying to say is sometimes she will learn from these things and maybe she will learn that in order for her to enjoy her toys she shouldn't cause any damage to them.

We should give them the ground rules and guide them through the paths ahead of them but we can never prevent them from everything.

i think it is ok for children to pop balloons because it shows them that sometimes you can't play with a balloon forever. Actually my 2 year old sister likes to pop balloons and she is ok with that but i don't think it is hurtful but if that is how your wife feels you should respect that and know she is always right.

Take it from me im 12 years old and my parents were the same way when I was little. They would always make me take so good care of my toys. I hated it. But now that I look back I can see that they did that to help me in the real world. It also taught me responsibility and how to respect other peoples belongings. It was a good life lesson.
- hope it helps
