A cousin told us that pregnant women are not suppossed to eat goat cheese during pregnancy. I ate it probaly once a month with my last pregnancy and she was stillborn at 22 weeks due to umbilical accident. Also a greek resturant uses goat cheese on there bread sticks where i have ate before pregnancy. Should I avoid eating goat cheese the second time around. I ate it with the chips and on top of some food which was melted.

Your cousin is correct, pregnant women should avoid certain foods and goat cheese or even Mexican cheese unfortunately fall into that category! But I doubt that is what caused your miscarriage. If you think it was a problem, you should tell your doctor and they can test you for the bacterial infections that those kinds of products can have on the fetus. Tell your doctor everything!!!

I feel that Goat Cheese is getting a 'bad rap' here that it does not deserve. There are many foods that CAN be harmful to your pregnancy, but it's more HOW THE FOOD IS MADE/PREPARED than what the food IS. IE - goat cheese CAN (and often IS) made from Pasteurized milk, in properly sanitary dairy facilities. Properly made goat cheese WILL NOT interfere with a pregnancy or cause any harm. Goat Cheese made with DIRTY utensils, in an UNCLEAN environment, CAN carry deadly diseases, like listerosis but PLEASE, PLEASE recognize -- COWS MILK CHEESE can be dangerous TOO. ANY CHEESE made in UNSANITARY conditions, CAN CARRY listerosis and a lot of other nasty bacteria. So can BREAD that has gone moldy, MEAT not properly refrigerated or cooked, MILK not properly stored, ETC., ETC.. Also, 'mexican restaurant' is a very broad term. There are good and bad restaurants in ALL types -- you may have a Mexican Restaurant that is very clean and uses proper hygenine in it's kitchen and monitors it's staff -- and you may have a mexican restaurant that pays no attention to how the cheese is stored (ie - leaves it out of the fridge all day long) or staff that do not wash their hands, etc.. So I think it's important to know WHERE and HOW your food is being prepared, as that's more likely to be a potential for illness than what's actually IN the food. The same goes for Chinese food, Italian food, a burger shop, etc.. Like the other answers to your question say, I think it is doubtful that Goat Cheese was responsible for loosing your baby -- but it is important to tell your doctor EVERYTHING. Also, some people are allergic to MILK PRODUCTS - that may be something you want to ask your doctor about, too. I hope all goes well for you, this time.

Why would only the cheese be unsafe? Why not the flour tortillas and salsa as well? Cheese is good for you during pregnancy. It is dairy and can be a healthy snack. Enjoy whatever you can stomach. And cravings do not usually have anything to do with the health of the baby. If you crave mexican, eat it!

If the cheese is unpasteurized it is unsafe during pregnancy. Goat cheese is a soft cheese so it's not safe. No Feta, blue cheese, those kinds. It can cause you to be sick.

If you didn't get sick from it with Listeriosos (the illness from the cheese) it probably isn't what harmed your baby before.

Yes, Please avoid Goat Cheese....You are also not supposed to eat Blue Cheese either. You really need to do some research or ask your doctor about foods to avoid.... I'm sure if you run a query in Google under "Things to avoid during pregnancy" you will get a good list. Some of these things are very very very true and not old wives tales.... I'm sorry for your loss, please take care of yourself during this pregnancy......

I dont think the goat cheese was the reason for your other child being still born ( i'm sorry to hear about that). I think you should ask your doctor to be sure.

Congratulations!

You are not supposed to eat anything raw or undercooked that is unpastorized...because of bacterial growth. PG women are 20-30% more likely to get sick from bacteria on foods. Same applies to cold cuts.
