what is this. Is it some kind of decoration? If so why decorate your tree in front of your house with toilet paper?

You're kidding right? Are you not American? It's called "rolling" or teepeeing(TP as in toilet paper)"and is definitely not decoration. It's usually seen around Halloween or after a high school football "Homecoming Game," though certainly not restricted to those occasions. It's a minor, celebratory act of vandalism that is usually overlooked by both the homeowner whose tree was targeted as well as by the police.

I kind of doubt it is some kind of tradition. I sure wouldn't decorate mine with toilet paper. Maybe it's a redneck thing.

toilet paper around the tree is really tacky....I'm not sure what or where that tradition stems from or if it is even real....but it is really ridiculous!
